Seeing with Electrons

We investigate atomic-scale functionalities in energy-related materials with high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging and spectroscopy. Many of the properties associated with applications (e.g., catalysis, ion conduction, etc.) manifest only when the material is under working conditions as a result of applied stimuli associated with heat, light, stress, electric field, gas, liquid, etc. These stimuli trigger structural and chemical dynamics which must be understood to develop new materials. Our research combines in situ imaging and spectroscopy with artificial intelligence to reveal atomic-level dynamics in materials.
